In an interview this morning on FOX News Channel’s FOX & Friends, White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett said that the terms of the money lent to the banks should be “honored” and that there’s a “collective responsibility on behalf of all of the large financial institutions to pay the money back.” Mrs. Jarrett had also some choice words for Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein.
Here area few excerpts from that interview: Courtesy of FOX News Channel’s FOX & Friends:
ON WALL STREET CEOs NOT WANTING TO PAY THE MONEY BACK:
“In fact the law that was passed that provided for lending the money in the first place required the financial institutions to repay the money. So I’m sure if Lloyd [Blankfein, CEO of Goldman Sachs] were lending money he would want the terms to be honored, and we’re just saying the same thing.”
“It’s pretty stunning that they wouldn’t feel a responsibility for repaying the taxpayers in full.”
“When we lent the money in the first place, everybody agreed that the financial institutions would pay it back. It’s not just as simple as Goldman Sachs paying back the money that was lent to Goldman; the money that was lent to AIG benefited Goldman, so there’s a collective responsibility on behalf of all of the large financial institutions to pay the money back.”
ON FINES BEING IMPOSED ON BANKS TO PAY BACK TAX PAYER DOLLARS:
“The President is determined that every single penny of taxpayer dollars that was lent out to the banks and the financial institutions as a result of the economic crisis last year is repaid in full.”
“He wants to levy a tax on the liabilities of those banks, the large institutions, the ones that contributed most to the economic crisis and also the ones that benefited most from the taxpayer dollars.”
