News Corp Deputy Chairman: ‘Gov’t Is Not the Solution to Business Issues’

News Corp (NWS) Deputy Chairman, President and COO Chase Carey spoke with FOX Business Network’s Neil Cavuto about the changing media landscape and government involvement in businesses, saying “I’m not a big fan of government being the solution to business issues.”

Below are excerpts from the interview: Courtesy of Fox Business News

On whether the government should get tougher on Google:

“I’m not a big fan of the government being the solution to business issues.”

On Rupert Murdoch’s comment that they might take their content off of Google and whether that would be bad for News Corp in the long run:

“We believe you have to build healthy business models and we believe a healthy business model has to be supported above the advertising dollars in some form of payment…You have to believe in the quality of your content, the value of your content, and ultimately business models that will evolve, and if people aren’t doing it yet, that seems to be a path that does not lead you to a healthy business. We’re not going to be sheep jumping off a cliff.”

On charging for content online:

“I actually believe this is the way businesses are going to have to evolve…I don’t think ad supported only will work.”

On Vivendi’s position in the Comcast/NBC Universal deal:

“Vivendi feels they’re in a position where they’ve got some leverage. They’re two guys that want to do a deal, and I think it is largely them feeling they can extract an extra pound of flesh out of the transaction.”

On whether the deal with Comcast and NBC Universal happens:

“Yes, I think they deal gets done.”

On rumors of Peter Chernin taking the reins at NBC:

“I would be surprised if Peter took that job…I don’t think Peter is looking at this point to go work for somebody.”

On the regulatory scrutiny that would come of Comcast acquiring NBC Universal:

“I think you’ll have a fair amount of regulatory noise around it. In many ways you’re in uncharted waters…

I think this transaction will flush out a fair bit about how this administration is going to approach the regulatory matters here, both content distribution and new media, sort of will all be a part of this mix.”

On whether he and Rupert Murdoch looked at the NBC Universal properties:

“Any time you have a unique franchise, NBC Universal is certainly a unique franchise in our world, and I think that is part of our job to kick the tires on anything like that. In many ways I don’t think we are doing our job if we’re not looking at and exploring various things.”

On whether there will be a last minute News Corp bid on NBC Unviersal:

“No, you’re not going to see any midnight headlines coming out of us.”

On the President:

“I think the perception of him is that he is not business friendly.”

On the White House vs FOX News:

“I think we all recognize that the government should be acting as the government and FOX News is trying to cover the news. At the end of the day it delivered stronger ratings and benefited FOX in the short term. We hope and believe that the government is not going to be vindictive against parties whose views they don’t always like.”

On why he came back to News Corp:

“The reason I came back to News Corp from DirecTV was I think there’s a fabulous group of businesses here that are truly unique.”

“My honest expectation is that Rupert would probably outlast me. In many ways, he is as young as ever.”
