Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has been at odds with each other for decades so it should come to no one’s surprise that the frenemies are still bickering like an old couple. This time, Microsoft dropped the mic in a peculiar commercial that sums up everyone’s frustration over Macbook’s lack of upgrades. In the video, Microsoft took a shot at MacBook Air, claiming that the notebook is not good for anything other than being a “cat hat.” Check out the video below:
In the video, we hear the familiar talking points from earlier Surface commercials, highlighting some of the Surface Pro 4’s improved features, particularly the detachable keyboard, pen, and high-resolution touchscreen. The commercial sits Microsoft’s newest tablet side by side Apple’s MacBook Air, calling the latter “slower, heavier, and a bit square” compared to the Surface. The MacBook Air was even labeled as being “less useful, like a hat for your cat.”
Clearly, Microsoft is criticizing Apple for MacBook Pro’s dated design and lack of innovative features. Although Apple introduced the latest reiteration of the MacBook Air in 2015, the MacBook Pro Line hasn’t seen an upgrade since 2012. In fact, Brian Hall, the general manager of the Surface brand at Microsoft slammed the iPhone maker for offering “old technology” to its customers in a tweet:
“I compete with Apple and respect them. But they ARE doing their customers a disservice at times with old tech…”
Although Apple offers better hardware specs with each product launching, new models for the MacBook Pro line has been delayed to a point where other rivals – including Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 – have overtaken the Cupertino tech giant’s premium laptop line.
In the commercial, the advanced features of the Surface Pro are cleverly snuck into the script. Based on leaks around Apple’s newest MacBook design, the features offered by the Surface Pro are something that’s beyond any MacBook’s reach.
Critics agree, Microsoft does have a point. Apple has coasted its computer line for years. While most laptops come with touchscreen technology, Apple’s premium notebooks sport the same old design. On the other hand, touchscreen display has become a standard feature even among the cheapest Windows laptops.
In a report, Forbes noted that although Apple remains as one of the leading sources of mobile apps for the iPhone and iPad, OSX’s software base failed to impress. While Windows 10 is not perfect, it does come with an excellent catalogue of third-party applications, which is one of its biggest advantages over Apple’s operating system.
At this point, it is hard to get excited over MacBook’s upcoming upgrades when the Surface Pro is offering incredible features on the table.
The Surface Pro is set to launch this October at an event in NYC. Meanwhile, Apple’s MacBook Pro will finally launch a new design this fall, just in time for the holiday season.
