Weekly Jobless Claims Decline 31,000 for the Week Ended Aug. 21

Applications for jobless benefits dropped by 31,000, the first decline in a month, to 473,000 in the week ended Aug. 21, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The four-week average of new claims rose slightly, up 3,250 to 486,750, the highest since late November.
