4. MakerBot

Brooklyn, N.Y.-based MakerBot, a company founded in January 2009 by Bre Pettis, Adam Mayer, and Zach “Hoeken” Smith, produces desktop 3-D printers and also sells the plastic material used for printing off objects.

Investors: High Line Venture Partners, The Foundry Group – the firm in August 2011 invested $10 million in the company and joined its board, Bezos Expeditions, True Ventures, RRE Ventures, Lerer Ventures and Thrive Capital.
