According to a report from Fortune’s Phillip Elmer-Dewitt, Apple (AAPL) is readying press invites for an iPad Mini-focused event next Wednesday, Oct. 10. The report noted the information comes from a “major Apple investor” who says he’s heard it from “multiple sources.”
Apple has been said to be prepping for the unveiling of the eagerly-anticipated iPad-Mini tablet for a while now, and an earlier report from AllThingsD, which has an excellent track record in these matters, suggested October could be when it became official.
If the rumor is true, and if Apple follows its typical press invite-announcement-shipping routine, that would suggest an iPad Mini-special event to unveil the product on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Sales could begin within a week of that, if Apple follows the iPhone 5′s schedule, with a launch day of Friday Nov. 2 – just in time for the Christmas rush.
The iPad-Mini is expected to be equipped with Apple’s A5 dual-core processor, 1GB RAM and have a narrower bezel allowing for a larger screen in the 7.85-inch form factor, compared to the 9.7-inch screen on Apple’s current iPad version. The iPad miniature is also expected to come with a front and back side camera, Wifi, and dipper Facebook (FB) and Google (GOOG) Map integration. Whether Apple will hit the sub $299 price point remains to be seen.
