Yahoo Inc (YHOO), once the biggest and most valuable web company in the world, is poised to name a new CEO, an announcement that could come as early as Wednesday morning, AllThingsD‘s Kara Swisher reported — who got the tip thanks to “sources close to the situation.”
Swisher explains that the leading candidate likely to get the top job is PayPal President Scott Thompson, who currently runs eBay’s (EBAY) online payments unit.
Yahoo fired its last CEO Carol Bartz in September, ending a frustrating two-year tenure in which she tried to revitalize the Silicon Valley Internet giant. After Bartz’s ouster, Yahoo board said it had started a strategic review of the company’s option, including a possible sale of all or part of the web portal.
The online media company, which draws more than 600 million unique visitors to all its services, has been run since September by its board of directors and also interim CEO Tim Morse, who had previously been the co.’s Chief Financial Officer.
