According to Freddie Mac’s weekly survey (FRE), the cost of borrowing to buy a home is now at its lowest level in almost four decades. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.78% for the week ending April 2, 2009, down from last week when it averaged 4.85%. It is the lowest 30 year rate since Freddie started keeping track in 1971. Last year at this time, the 30-year fixed averaged 5.88%.
The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage this week averaged 4.52%, down from last week when it averaged 4.58%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year averaged 5.42%.
