Sales of new one-family houses in April 2010 came in at a SAAR of 504,000, according to estimates released jointly today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of HUD. This is 14.8% above the revised March rate of 439,000 and is 47.8% above the April 2009 estimate of 341,000. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had estimated sales would rise 3.4% to 425,000.
The April gain followed a 29.8% surge in March, the biggest monthly increase in 47 years.
