Shipping Resources

Capital Link Shipping - provides Investor Relations Services on behalf of many of the shippers. This is a good place to start. They provide coverage of most of the NYSE listed shippers, including drybulk, tankers, containers, etc. They provide news clippings for listed companies, a daily Baltic Dry Index Report (usually posted after noon each day), links to the websites and some analysis of each of the companies they list. They also provide access to some very important industry newsletters, most notably Compass, Fearnley's, and starting this week, BMTI. (discussed below) The Blog is generally not worthwhile. They also regularly host forums of Shipping Company CEO's and analysts. Of course you must remember that their job is to boost the share price of the companies that pay them for their services. All in all a very worthwhile site with some nice charting tools.

Hellenic Shipping News - provides a daily newsclipping service on all Greek and International Shipping stories. You can sign up for a daily email with the news. This is an excellent service. The only caveat is that sometimes they will clip stories that are not from objective sources, so, as always, you must check out the source of the story. For instance they recently ran an article by a gold bullion company that contained the typical goldbug paranoia stuff. They also provide a weekly Imarex report on the paper market (FFAs).

  • The Baltic Index is the index that reflects the current time charter rates for shipping. There are several different indexes.

The Baltic Exchange - charges a fee for this information. But you can get it free and only slightly delayed at various spots. The earliest free report is found at the Dry Shipping (DRYS) web site "Daily : DryShips Inc. - Daily Market Report

Fearnleys - offers a comprehensive and professional service to major players within the shipping industry. This service encompasses chartering of all major types of tonnage within these markets both in the capacity of securing cargoes for vessels and securing vessels for cargoes as well as arranging time charters, contracts of affreightment and period business. They also produce a weekly report that tracks the charter and sales of ships.

Compass Maritime - also produces an excellent weekly report showing the rates, sales, and other valuable information. Often you can learn of the charter, purchase or sale of a vessel a week or more before it is revealed by the Shipper.

Barry Rogliano Salles – have been Shipbrokers since 1854. They provide excellent free information on Freight Rates, Ship prices, the Orderbook (number of newbuild ships ordered for construction) along with some very nice graphs and a weekly newsletter.

Here is an example:

......

BMTI - is a Berlin, Germany company that provides excellent information on shipping trends. While you have to pay for the info first hand, they do provide a free "Daily Snippet" and their weekly newsletter is now available at Capital Link Shipping. The BMTI Report is a daily information service for the shipping industry. The report, published in English, analyzes clearly, accurately and concisely the most important developments in the international Deep Sea Shipping business. It also provides summaries of principal transactions.

Norden D/S - provides an excellent Glossary of shipping terms. Want to know the difference between a Handysize and a Handymax? This is the place. (Incidentally, this is an excellent shipping company, traded on the Copenhagen exchange but also available OTC. IMO one of the most undervalued of the dry bulk shippers - check out the rest of their web site and watch their last quarterly report webcast to see what I mean.

Quote:
Handymax
An indication of the size of a bulkcarrier in the order of 40,000-60,000 dwt.
Handysize
An indication of the size of a bulkcarrier in the order of 25,000-40,000 dwt.
Imarex - Interested in trading Forward Freight Agreements ("FFAs")? This is the "paper" market where contracts for the shipment of freight are bought and sold, for speculation or to reduce risk by companies involved in the business. Imarex has the market. THey also provide training courses for those interested in entering this volatile trade.

Poten & Partners - provide the latest news and info on the Tankers.

Have fun! When you invest in the shippers you are owning real assets that haul the goods that build the world. There is a lot of risk in shipping but also very good rewards!
