Research In Motion, Microsoft Planning to Compete with iTunes

Two of Apple’s (AAPL) chief rivals Research in Motion (RIMM) and Microsoft (MSFT) are looking to compete with iTunes, according to AppleInsider. Research in Motion’s Playbook, scheduled to launch in the coming months, will provide users with access to about 13 million songs, RIM announced Wednesday. RIM has partnered with 7digital for its PlayBook touchscreen tablet.

[via AppleInsider] “The 7digital Music Store is a perfect complement to the high-performance BlackBerry PlayBook, providing users with fast searches and downloads, and a slick interface that makes it very easy to discover, purchase and enjoy music,” said Alistair Mitchell, VP, BBM Platform & Integrated Services. “We are thrilled to be working with 7digital to provide BlackBerry PlayBook users with access to an amazing catalog of 13 million tracks.”

AppleInsider also said that software giant Microsoft is reportedly working on a new music service dubbed “Ventura.” The new project is said to be in development in the co.’s Redmond, Wash., Entertainment and Devices division.

During Wednesday’s trading session, RIM shares have lost 0.69% to $64.35. MSFT is down 0.15% to $25.87 and AAPL has lost 1.03% to $352.14.
