RIM Hits Out at Steve Jobs’s Assessment of the Tablet Computer Market

Research In Motion (RIMM) co-CEO Jim Balsillie in a blog-post blasted Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs, arguing that “many customers are getting tired of being told what to think by Apple.” Balsillie’s statement was a response to comments Jobs made during a rare appearance on Apple’s fourth quarter earnings conference call two days ago, where he took the opportunity to attack almost everything non-Apple.

Here’s what Jobs had to say on the Tablet Computer Market:

“The current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA, dead on arrival. Their manufacturers will learn the painful lesson that their tablets are too small.”

Jobs, who criticized RIM for not being able to move beyond the company’s existing customer base as oppose to expand and develop smartphones targeted to the enterprise, also said that he doesn’t see the co. “catching up with [Apple] in the foreseeable future.”
