Judge Rules Against Obama Administration on 6-Month Drilling Moratorium

Reuters reports that United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana Martin Feldman on Tuesday ruled against the Obama administration’s 6-month moratorium on deepwater drilling in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon explosion and ongoing gush of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

The ruling, granted in favor of the lawsuit filed by Louisiana-based Hornbeck Offshore Services LLC (HOS) and more than a dozen co.’s involved in offshore drilling operations to reverse the mortorium imposed by the U.S. Department of Interior, is a blow to the White House which had hoped the ban would provide time to ensure other wells are operating safely.

The administration responded with a promise to appeal against the ruling.
