The popular microblogging Web site Twitter suffered a hacking attack late Thursday night, early Friday morning, by a group calling itself the “Iranian Cyber Army”.
The attack, which left millions of “tweeters” unable to communicate on the website, appeared to have been a DNS attack, redirecting users to a new page.
The site was down for nearly an hour before it was fixed.
The following message which was posted on Twitter’s site when it was defaced — apparently protesting the U.S. — read:
Iranian Cyber Army
THIS SITE HAS BEEN HACKED BY IRANIAN CYBER ARMY

Twitter, which is not the most sophisticated site when it comes to security, said its domain name system records were temporarily “compromised”, but the company said that the problem was later fixed.
According to Reuters, the group behind the attack also hacked an Iranian opposition website.
It is unclear who the group Iranian Cyber Army is and if it is connected to Iran.
Earlier this summer Twitter played a fundamental role in spreading news when Iran’s disputed presidential election spiraled into deadly riots in Tehran. The opposition party led by Mir Hossein Mousavi rejected Ahmadinejad’s alleged victory and took to social networking and used Twitter to inform the world.
