On the news front this morning:
- The WSJ reports Amazon.com (AMZN) posted a 69% increase in third-quarter profit. The Seattle-based online retailer said its income for the quarter increased to $199 million, or 45 cents a share, from $118 million, or 27 cents a share, a year ago. Sales surged 28% to $5.45 billion. Amazon forecast fourth-quarter sales would grow between 21% and 35% to between $8.1 billion and $9.1 billion, with operating income projected to rise between 10% and 56% to $300 million to $425 million.
- Bloomberg news reports Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) posted a smaller drop in profit than analysts estimated after slashing costs to make up for falling sales. The stock rose as much as 8.7 percent in early trading. First-quarter net income fell to $3.57 billion, or 40 cents a share, beating the 32-cent average estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Revenue, excluding $1.47 billion deferred to a future quarter, was $12.9 billion, Microsoft said today in a statement.
- AP reports Schlumberger (SLB) 3Q tumbled. The co. reported net income of $787 million, or 65 cents per share. Schlumberger’s revenue fell 25 percent compared with the year-ago quarter, to $5.43 billion. That missed analyst estimates of $5.48 billion.
- T. Rowe Price Group Inc.’s (TROW) 3Q profit fell 13%. The co. reported a profit of $132.4 million, or 50 cents a share, down from $152.4 million, or 56 cents a share, on a y/y basis. Net revenue decreased 10% to $498.1 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters (TRI) forecast earnings of 46 cents on revenue of $496 million.
