Neglecting healthy vitamin D levels for fear of kidney stones is like cancelling ambulance service for an entire city for fear the paint on the vehicles might get chipped while in service. The chance of developing kidney stones from vitamin D supplementation is minimal. Do not confuse it with calcium supplementation, that is all too often prescribed with Vitamin D. If anything the large amounts of calcium in supplements is too much while the ridiculously modest amounts of vitamin D included are a joke.

I for one would prefer reducing my chances of getting cancer, heart disease, dimentia, depression, macular degeneration, Parkinson's, MS, SAD, osteoporosis, etc etc etc by supplementing with D3.

Oh...by the way...in case you haven't heard...the definitive, irrefutably cause of most breast cancer was announced Tuesday Nov. 4 in Toronto. Can you guess what causes at least 77% of all breast cancer cases?

As long suspected, a vitamin D deficiency!!

Here is the link:

http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/November2009/04/c5846.html

Your choice I think... a tiny, tiny chance of kidney stones or the great, big, fat, possibility of contracting the number one women's fatal maignancy, breast cancer?

Hmmm....

um....please do your research on the side effects of
vitamin D. hello...kidney stones. check out the
marshall protocol. spend some time developing an objective
education on vitamin D, and then proceed with (or without)
supplementation with caution.

Vitamin D3 pricing (where and what to get):
The standard pricing for Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) at most health food stores is $8.80 for 120 2000 iu Vitamin D3 gel capsules (about 4.2c/capsule). If you're looking for a bargain, Costco sells 600 2000 iu Vitamin D3 gel capsules for just 13.99 (about 2.3c/capsule) at their store and on-line, the best deal I know of. Walmart sells 300 2000 iu Vitamin D3 in a white pill combined with calcium for about $8.00, which is 2.6c/pill. You can buy Now brand Vitamin D3 120 2000 iu gel capsules for around 4.00 (3.3 per capsule) and Carlson brand Vitamin D3 120 2000 iu gel capsules for about 5.00 (4.2c per capsule) at Amazon.com from various vendors.

Many manufacturers are now providing a pill with 5,000 iu of Vitamin D3. Nothing wrong with that daily dose for an adult, but establish a 25(OH)D baseline with your doctor once you've been at that dose for three months. You may need more to maintain at least 50 ng/ml serum blood levels of Vitamin D3.

Many researchers suggest avoiding Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol), as plant-source Vitamin D2 has an uncertain metabolism in humans. I am a vegetarian (no meat, eggs, dairy) but make an exception when necessary for gelatin capsules, etc., to avoid losing the blessing. I stick with Vitamin D3.

The typical source for D3 is either fish liver oil, or, lanolin-based (sheep wool fat) Vitamin D activated with ultraviolet B light which is preferred by vegetarians since the lanolin is a byproduct of sheep shearing rather than animal slaughter. Most capsules do contain gelatin. Manufacturers will specify ingredients if you call them.

Also buy Vitamin D for your friends who have autoimmune diseases such as high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes types I and II, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, lupus, asthma, COPD, congestive heart failure, gingivitis, and, a tendency to come down with viral infections - colds, flu, pneumonia. If your doctor understands the dynamics of Vitamin D and you're deficient, you can raise your serum levels to 50 ng/ml or higher very rapidly by taking large doses. Stoss therapy involves providing a 50,000 iu pill once a week for eight weeks after which a 25(OH)D test is administered to create a new baseline. You can take 7,000 daily or any combination of doses that equals 5 0,000 iu a week to achieve the same result. "Reinhold Vieth + Vitamin D3 dosage" on Google or Bing will get you research results on dosage. A common nursing home practice is to provide patients with 600,000 iu intravenously during the fall to economically raise everyone's Vitamin D levels before the winter. Probably saves a lot of lives. VitaminDCouncil.org is an excellent site.

If you've read this far, you're part of a revolution in health. How did it take us so long to overlook the role of sunshine?

Of all things health related the only thing that matters is to be sure your activated vitamin D3 serum level is at least 50 ng/ml, year 'round. The rest will pretty much take care of itself.
What's that you say? Isn't quitting smoking important too? Well it is of minor concern compared to a vitamin D3 deficiency. A vitamin D3 deficiency has an all cause mortality increase of 54%. Smoking's all cause death risk is just 23%...chump change.
Eating right (attempting to eat enough foods high in D3 is completely hopeless and a fatal myth), losing weight (obesity appears to be vitamin D3 dependent), getting enough exercise (D3 regulates muscle and athletic performance- who knew?) etc are all nice things but really just dust, chalk, when it comes to things that really matter. What really matters, beyond any other single effort, is to keep D3 levels consistently healthy, for the rest of your life.

Wake up and investigate the facts…be certain to have pillows and soft things near your chair when you look up the following: The Vitamin D Council Vitamin D3 World. You will need them when you fall out of your chair you will have soft things to land upon.

You're absolutely right. The intended beneficiaries of every investment strategy should invest in Vitamin D, man, woman, child, at all stages of life. Vitamin D from sunshine (or supplements) prognosticates the level of available resources out there. Lots of sunshine turns on genes that are designed to maximize our utilization of environmental resources. Low sunshine redesigns the metabolism to cope with famine. A good example is the bear that rampages in the spring and summer by hibernates in the fall and winter. We have clothed ourselves and gone indoors and this primary indicator of resource levels is no longer available to us. The best solution is sensible sun exposure, with lots of skin exposed. The appropriate solution in the civilized world is a dose of Vitamin D3 somewhere around 3,000 to 4,000 iu per day, every day. You can establish a baseline by taking a 25(OH)D vitamin D test. Optimal levels, according to researchers who understand the multiple roles of Vitamin D in the body, is 50-80 ng/ml. You should keep your calcium, magnesium and zinc levels in the normal range also, calcium 1000 mg, magnesium 500 mg, zinc 15 mg, as Vitamin D uploads these minerals from the diet, or if not available, from bone and muscle. Chances are your doctor has not read the research available over the last 5 years. Do your own research and bring articles to your doctor. High blood pressure is a good example of an auto-immune disease that responds quickly to high doses of Vitamin D3. Something to invest in.
